PURPOSE:To accurately calculate the tracking point of a target by reducing the influence of a dummy light source such as the sun to a large extent, by setting a point, where the horizontal direction addition compressed value of an image signal takes a max. value, to the vertical direction coordinates of the tracking point of the target. CONSTITUTION:In the case of a target 8 (e.g., ship) long in the horizontal direction and short in the vertical direction, the horizontal compressed value signal 12 obtained from the image signal from an infrared image pick-up apparatus 2 by a horizontal direction compressed value operation circuit 11 shows an extremely remarkable peak by a target 8.
