The device comprises, at each end A, B of the line and at the end of the tapping, means of formulating, for each phase, an electrical signal proportional to the vector value of the current IA, IB, IC crossing the corresponding end, means MA, MB, MC of transmitting and receiving electrical signals and in particular of transmitting towards one end of the line the current signal from the other end of the line and from the tapping, the device further comprising, at each end A, B, C of the line, means M'A, M'B M'C, of formulating a signal termed the sum-signal equal to the additive inverse of the sum of the current signals from one end of the line and from the end of the tapping, means of determining whether the end of the vector representing the said sum-signal in a Fresnel plane is inside or outside a given contour and means of formulating a fault indication command and a command for triggering the on/off switches in the case in which the end of the vector is inside the contour.
