PURPOSE:To provide a versatile flame-retardant capable of imparting excellent flame-retardance to any kind of polymer, by reacting a brominated phenol with a (meth)allyl halide, and then reacting with e.g. bromine, etc. CONSTITUTION:(A) The compound obtained by reacting a brominated phenol with a hydroxyl-equivalent of allyl halide and/or methallyl halide is made to react with (B) a caustic alkali in water and/or an organic solvent, and the product is subjected to the dehydrobromination to obtain the compound of formula I (D is Br or RO; R is group of formula II of formula III; A is group of formula IV or formula V; B is group of formula VI, SO2, O or CH2). The compound is added to a polymer (e.g. polystyrene resin, polyethylene resin, etc. or their polymer blend) in an amount of preferably 0.2-30wt%, as it is or in the form of solution or emulsion.
