PURPOSE:To obtain a laser printer with improved recording resolution and a recording picture with excellent quality and simple constitution by installing an optical deflection means whose irradiated light is deflected at a right angle to the horizontal scanning direction (subscanning direction) in response to a drive signal on the way of optical path of a laser beam. CONSTITUTION:The optical deflecting means 30 is a means using an AO deflector utilizing an acousto-optic effect and deflects the irradiated light at a right angle (subscanning direction) to the horizontal scanning direction of a polygon mirror in response to the impressed drive signal. Fig. shows the arranging pattern of recording dots by the printer and the dot is recorded in zigzag in the horizontal scanning direction as shown in solid arrow lines, and the dots of lines lA and lB realize the recording dot pattern shifted by a half pitch (50mum) in the horizontal scanning direction (main scanning direction) and the direction orthogonal thereto (subscanning direction).
