PURPOSE:To obtain an upgrading catalyst having high activity and a long life by mixing alumina having a specified narrow pore diameter with zeolite and thereafter molding the mixture and depositing Ni and Mo components on the molded body. CONSTITUTION:10-100wt% alumina having 100-200Angstrom narrow pore diameter based on zeolite is mixed with the zeolite and the mixture is molded and thereafter Ni and Mo components are deposited on the molded body. The depositing amount of Ni and Mo is preferably regulated to 0.1-10.0wt% Ni (however expressed in terms of an oxide), 0.1-20.0wt% Mo and 0.5-25.0wt% Ni plus Mo based on a carrier (zeolite plus alumina). When heavy oil and hydrogen are allowed to react with each other under the condition of 150atm and 370-380 deg.C by using the upgrading catalyst, the removal of nitrogen is made possible with less consumption of hydrogen and a life of the catalyst is prolonged in comparison with a conventional catalyst.
