PURPOSE:To produce nitrogen highly free of oxygen, by adding ammonia to crude nitrogen gas obtained by performing adsorption and separation operation, and reacting the resultant mixture with one or more cmpound oxide. Catalysts of Mn and V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, W and Ag. CONSTITUTION:A raw material gas 8 is passed through a pressure variable adsorption and separation apparatus 1, and oxygen-enriched gas 9 is separated. The resultant residual crude nitrogen gas is then taken out of a taking outlet 2, preheated in a heat exchange part 5 and mixed with ammonia gas led from an ammonia source 10 in a gas mixture part 3. The mixture gas is then led to a contact reaction part 4 containing a catalyst 6, and oxygen is reacted with the ammonia and converted into nitrogen and water. The reaction product is then passed through the heat exchange part 5 and led to the use for the produced gas or led to a purification art 14 to give the aimed nitrogen 15 of high purity. A compound oxide catalyst of Mn and one or more of V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, W and Ag is used as the catalyst 6.
