A weight-compensating device for vertically adjustable furniture comprises a spring power accumulator and a cable pull guide, a cable being attached by one of its ends to one of two telescopically displaceable tubes and by its other end to a cable roll which is firmly connected in the circumferential direction to a curve or cam disc to which a second cable is fastened, said second cable being connected to the spring power accumulator. A weight compensating device of this type requires only a few elements and only little installation space. In particular, it is possible to equip furniture having only one support leg, in particular single-column tables, with a reliable weight-compensating device which is also capable of compensating high resting weights and in which, regardless of the position in height of the resting weight, the same restoring force is always exerted thereon. In preferred embodiments, the spring power accumulator and the cable pulleys are installed in a housing which can either be arranged horizontally, in which case it also serves as a rest for the table top or the like, or vertically next to the telescopic tubes, in which case large spring power accumulators can also be used.
