NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [R<1> is H, halogen, CN, NO2, etc.; R<2>-R<5> are H. halogen, CN, NO2, lower alkyl, etc.; R<6> is H, halogen, CN, NO2, etc.; R<7> is halogen, CN, NO2, lower alkyl, etc.; R<8> is OR<12> (R<12> is H or 1-15C hydrocarbon group which may contain O or S), SR<12>, etc.; m is an integer 1-15; n is an integer 0- 10] and a salt thereof. EXAMPLE:Ethyl 2,6-dibromo-hex-2-en-4-ynoate. USE:An agricultural chemical such as herbicide, plant growth regulator, germicide, insecticide, etc. and a medicine such as a physiologically active agent, e.g. having inhibitory activity for synthesis of cholesterol. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II is reacted with a compound expressed by formula III to give a compound expressed by formula IV, which is then hydrolyzed to afford a compound expressed by formula V. The resultant compound expressed by formula V and a compound expressed by formula VI are subjected to the Wittig reaction to give the aimed compound expressed by formula I (n is 0).
