<p>Information related to the position of a control member (28) of a vehicle (12) is required for control of power delivered to the vehicle motors (22, 24). Available linear position encoders are expensive and prone to damage in an industrial environment. The instant apparatus (10) provides a simple and durable linear position encoder (10) having a piston (40) adapted to move within a housing (30). A plurality of sensors (68a-d) are each positioned along a different housing pathway (66a-d) and a plurality of sensible members (72a-d) are each positioned along a different piston pathway (54a-d). In response to movement of the piston (40) within the housing (30) the sensors (68a-d) deliver respective position signals to an electric circuit means (78), which, in turn, delivers respective coded digital signals to a vehicle controller (26). The apparatus (10) is digital in design and is of simple, rugged, and inexpensive construction.</p> |
