Optical fibre with an optical coupling system

The optical fibre has at its end a fused optical system consisting of a cylindrical rod (3) made from optical material at the free end of which a lens (4) is formed by fusing. The cylindrical rod (3) has a larger diameter than the optical fibre (1), and the lens (4) has a larger diameter than the rod (3). The lens (4) is, furthermore, aspherically constructed, i.e. the radius of curvature is smaller at its free end than that of the remainder of the lens. Production is performed in such a way that after fusing a ball to the rod (3) a further small drop of material is fused onto the ball at the front. The optical system obtained provides optimum coupling in and out of the optical power and has a very slight reaction on the radiation source. <IMAGE>
