PURPOSE:To improve the dispersion effect of magnetic powder, stability, running characteristic, etc. by hydrogenating part or the whole of the unsatd. fatty acid in lecithin. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic layer consisting of magnetic powder coated with a monomolecular layer consisting of hydrogenated lecithin nearly over the entire surface and a required binder is deposited on a nonmagnetic base. Soybean lecithin is advantageous in terms of a cost, supply, etc. as the lecithin which is the raw material for the hydrogenated lecithin to be used. The effect is higher as the amt. of the impurities such as oil, fatty acid contained in the hydrogenated lecithin is smaller. The effect is higher with the hydrogenated high-purity lecithin as the content of the oil, etc. is <=5%. Such magnetic recording medium is formed with a magnetic layer having the better dispersibility, stability, running characteristic, etc. than the conventional recording medium and is advantageous in that the static image time is long and abrasion loss and the wear of a magnetic head, etc. are decreased.
