PURPOSE:To further prolong the useful life of a sliding member, by dispersing a water-insoluble substance as eutectoid in an electroplated iron-phosphorus film, in a method of providing an electroplated iron-phosphorus layer on the surface of a sliding member. CONSTITUTION:At least one water-insoluble substance selected from metals, water-insoluble inorganic or organic particulates and fibers is dispersed in an iron- phosphorus electroplating bath comprising ferrous ions, hypophosphorous acid and/or a salt thereof and Al ions to prepare a composite electroplating bath. By using this composite electroplating bath, the sliding member blank is provided with a composite plated film in which the water-insoluble substance is dispersed as eutectoid in a host phase consisting of an electroplated iron-phosphorus film. Accordingly, the sliding member excellent in mechanical properties such as abrasion resistance is obtained which comprises the electroplated iron-phosphorus film host phase free of cracks and having excellent mechanical properties.
