PURPOSE:To obtain a high grade cutting tool made of a sintered alloy in low cost by the reduced number of processes, by sintering a green compact formed of a powdery tool grade steel alloy material with a specific composition in a non-oxidative non-decarburizing atmosphere before hardening the same under a specific temp. condition. CONSTITUTION:A green compact with a density ratio of 70% or more is molded in a shape near to an edge tool member by using a powdery alloy or powdery mixture consisting of 11-18% Cr, 0.2-5% Mo, 0.2-3% V, 0-1% Si, 1.5-2.4% C and the remainder of Fe. This green compact is sintered at a temp. from the liquid phase generating temp. of the powder to a temp. 20 deg.C higher than said temp. in a non-oxidative non-decarburizing atmosphere. This sintered body is held at a hardening temp. of 900-1,150 deg.C for about 15min or more and cooled to a room temp. in air. By this method, sintering and hardening treatments can be performed in a series of processes, and energy conservation and labor saving are performed.
