PURPOSE:To reduce the size over the entire part of an apparatus by providing an eldless tracked vehicle having high heat conductivity wound on a cooling drum and depositing metallic vapor by evaporation on a tape traveling in the curved part of the cooling drum together with the endless tracked vehicle thereby producing a magnetic tape. CONSTITUTION:Two cooling drums 15a, 15b having high heat conductivity and an endless tracked vehicle 15 which has high heat conductivity and is put on the cooling drums are provided to an apparatus for producing a magnetic tape which produces the magnetic tape by depositing metallic vapor 12 by evaporation on a tape 14 in a vacuum. A curved part having prescribed curvature is formed by the endless tracked vehicle and the metallic vapor is deposited by evaporation on the tape 14 traveling in the curved part together with the endless tracked vehicle, by which the magnetic tape is produced. The tape is guided during the period when the tape is subjected to the vapor deposition and the heat by the vapor deposition can be escaped via the vehicle 15 to the drums 15a, 15b. The need for a vapor deposition roller having a large diameter as in the prior art is thus eliminated and therefore the apparatus for producing the magnetic tape is reduced in size.
