The machine for driving roadways and tunnels is equipped with running gear, in particular crawler-type running gear, a slewing ring, a shearing arm pivotable about the vertical slewing-ring axis, and a shearing head. The shearing arm can be moved up and down about a horizontal axis and - if need be - can be rotated about the shearing-arm axis, a floor-sensing machine unit projecting on the face side from the crawler-type running gear, and a discharging conveyor, connected to the machine, for the won rock being attached to this machine unit. The shearing arm has at least one applied-pressure cylinder/piston arrangement which is supported on the floor-sensing machine unit. The applied-pressure cylinder/piston arrangement is attached on the one hand to the shearing arm and on the other hand to the floor-sensing machine unit, which is constructed as part of a loading unit for the conveyor, e.g. as a loading apron or loading channel. The shearing arm has a shearing drum projecting on either side of the shearing arm. The loading unit is equipped with at least one screw conveyor which extends parallel to the shearing drum at least in certain areas. The screw conveyor is designed as a crushing roll with which the shearing drum interacts as a mating roll while a crushing gap is formed when the shearing arm is accordingly lowered.
