Substituted phenylsulfonyl guanidines of the formula < IMG > in which R1 is a phenyl or phenoxy group, R2 and R3 each independently is a lower alkyl or lower alkoxy group, and R4 is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group, which possess herbicidal activity. Intermediates therefor of the formulas < IMG > and < IMG > are new and also herbicidal.
