PURPOSE:To improve utilization of menu keys by making the operation of menu setting unnecessary and setting character strings, whose frequency in use is high, as a menu for a long period. CONSTITUTION:A data input device is provided with an internal storage device 104, a table which counts the number of appearances of character strings, and a menu table corresponding to menu keys on a keyboard 101. The character string inputted from the keyboard 101 is registered as a menu in the order of key input while substituting the character string inputted as data before. Meanwhile, in case that a registered character string is substituted by another newly inputted character string, the character string which is inputted as data less frequently in the past and is not inputted for a long period after preceding input is substituted. Inputted data is recognized in character string units divided by blanks or the like and is set as a menu corresponding to individual menu keys.
