摘要 909,413. Measuring electrically. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Nov. 12, 1958, No. 36448/58. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXVI] An apparatus for detecting electrically active particles in an ambient, e.g. ions, polar molecules, charged particles, easily polarized, and easily ionized molecules and atoms, comprises a semiconductor junction, so constructed as to have a large surface area of junction exposed to the ambient, and electrical circuitry to measure the change in the electrical characteristics of the junction when exposed to a change in ambient. The semi-conductor junction may be a PN junction comprising an appropriately doped silicon or germanium wafer and a point contact, or, as shown in Fig. 3, a plate of graphite with a coating of P or N type germanium or silicon 27 contacted by a tubular contact 28 having a slightly serrated end portion, as shown exaggerated at 28a, to provide access to the junction area for the ambient, the tubular contact being held in contact with the plate by spring 29, and the ambient being admitted to, and exhausted from, the casing by pipes 30 and 31, alternatively the device may take the form of a junction transistor 226, Fig. 9, in which one of the junctions has passages drilled therethrough to allow access of the ambient to the junction, similarly a point contact transistor, Fig. 10 (not shown), may be used having contacts of the form shown in Fig. 11. Electrical characteristics measured are any, or all, of resistance, inductance and capacitance of the junction and applied voltage and resulting current preferably in all cases with the junction reverse biased; additionally or alternatively, a pulse signal may be applied to the junction and the resulting waveform observed on an oscilloscope. Before use the detector is stabilized by passing a forward current through the junction of such a magnitude as to be slightly below that to cause burn-out while admitting to the device an atmosphere including a small amount of a gas with a polar molecule, other than water, e.g. HCl or NH 3 in dry nitrogen. Measurement circuit.-Fig. 1 comprises a detector 10 in a balanced bridge circuit with provision via switch 43 for reversing the voltage applied to the bridge for stabilization of the detector. Ammeter 14 and voltmeter 16 are incorporated to give indications of the characteristics of the device. A similar circuit arrangement utilizing an A.C. signal source for measurement and a D.C. source for stabilization is described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown), whilst an A.C. bridge circuit including an oscilloscope connected across the detector is described with reference to Fig. 5 (not shown), whilst a further embodiment, Fig. 8, is similar to Fig. 5 but incorporates a compensating element 26 which is exposed to the gas flow after it has been filtered to remove the components which it is required to detect. Fig. 7 shows another embodiment employing a compensator element and having diodes included to by-pass from the measuring instruments that phase of the applied current passing through the detector 26 in the forward direction, this phase of current being used solely for standardization of the detector. In the embodiments of Figs. 5, 7 and 8, the bridge balance may be offset in order that the phase corresponding to the forward voltage across the detector can be prevented from flowing through the bridge galvanometer. Fig. 9 shows the method of using a transistor type of detector measuring, for example, the gain of the transistor by applying an A.C. signal to the input, alternatively the D.C. characteristics of the transistor could be measured, Fig. 10 (not shown).
