PURPOSE:To realize a miniature and light-weight structure of a picture reader by using a means which detects the relative speed to an original and a one- dimensional image detecting means containing an array of many picture element sensors. CONSTITUTION:A main body cover is held by fingers and slided with pressure applied to an original 1. Thus a reading part 2 moves over the original 1 and at the same time a roll 3 is revolved. Then a gear 13 fixed to a shaft 11 is revolved and a disk 14 is revolved with the shift of the main body cover. Thus the light beam given from a light emitting element is transmitted through the disk 14 at each slit 15 and reaches the photodetecting element to apply on-and off-clocks to a clock line each time. Then a selection switch 7 selects sensors 6-1-6-n of a picture sensor part 6 to the right from the left one by one. Thus the signals of these sensors are delivered to a picture signal output line 10.
