PURPOSE:To protect well the surface of a thin metallic film which is liable to degenerate by coating the surface of the film formed on a substrate with a thin film of a metallic carbide. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a thin metallic film of Al, Ag, Fe, Tb, Gd or the like having <=10mum thickness formed on a glass substrate or the like is coated with a thin film of a metallic carbide having about 100Angstrom -1mum thickness. The metallic carbide is selected among the carbides of W, Mo, Ta, Si, Ti, Nb, Cr, Hf and Ni. The surface of the thin metallic film is well protected, so the film degenerates hardly, and the surface hardness is increased to improve the scratch resistance and wear resistance. |
