A topical preparation comprises a stable emulsion containing from approx. 30 to approx. 50% by volume of anhydrous ethyl ether in a pharmaceutically acceptable refined oily excipient, in particular coconut oil excipient from which most of the free fatty acids have been removed, with the emulsion having a boiling point of at least approx. 38 degree C. The topical preparation is used for the in vivo treatment of an area of the epidermis of a human patient who is infected with herpes simplex virus by applying the preparation to the infected area in a quantity which is sufficient to cover the infected area.
