NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [R<1> is H or lower alkyl; R<2> is 2-4C alkyl, 2-4C alkenyl, 2-4C alkynyl, 2-4C alkoxyalkyl or formulas IV-VIII (X, Y and Z are H, lower alkyl, halogen, NO2, NH2, etc.; W is O or S), etc.]. EXAMPLE:1-[1-(2-Naphthoxy)-ethylcarbonyl]-2-ethylhydrazine. USE:A herbicide, having rapid action, and effective for controlling perennial weeds in paddy fields. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II (A is halogen) is reacted with a compound expressed by formula III in the presence or absence of a base, e.g. pyridine, triethylamine or 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5.4.0]-7-undecene, in an inert solvent to give the aimed compound expressed by formula I . Benzene, methanol, acetone, etc. may be used as the above-mentioned solvent.
