The invention implements a versatile long-term respiration recording instrument comprising a transmitter which measures the breathing excursions of the thorax mechanically, electromechanically or electronically by means of a sensor and transmits the values found mechanically, electrically or by radio to a recording instrument which has an inscribable or magnetically markable paper or film web driven continuously and over a constant time which may or may not be provided or providable with time markers, and a recorder or magnetic head the recording strokes of which take place mechanically or electromechanically, the transmitter being held on a thorax belt which is open in the sternal region and is held by shoulder straps between the mamillae and the epigastric costal arches, on which thorax belt there is guided with little friction a sliding belt which is closed in the sternal region by means of a central piece which differs from the belts in that it is stretchable and whose change in length caused by the breathing is measured mechanically by means of a rigid strip or wire, or else electronically, for example by means of a wire strain gauge.
