A moving object, for example a vehicle, contains a magnetic probe which measures the direction of the earth magnetic field. An evaluating circuit is used for determining the course of the vehicle with respect to the earth magnetic field direction and this course is displayed on a display unit. However, the vehicle generates interfering fields and also soft-magnetic parts of the vehicle produce distortion in the earth magnetic field.
