PURPOSE:To correct characters either hard to read or erroneously read-out by replacing those existing on a screen and to simplify a correcting operation by correcting characters impossible to read-out or erroneously read-out by utilizing the recognized result of other characters displayed on a screen. CONSTITUTION:Characters on a document 1 are scanned and photoelectrically converted by a scanning means, subjected to pretreatment such as binary operation and characters are recognized by comparing with a reference pattern in a recognition dictionary 3 by a recognizing means 2. Recognized results are stored in a recognized result storing means 4 together with the regulated number of selected recognized candidate characters in decreasing order of size, and displayed on a screen of a display/input means 5. For instance, since there is a right character in correspondence with a character ''song'' on the document 1 in a recognized candidate character string 9, the right character is selected by a recognized candidate character selecting means 10, the recognized result in the recognized result string means 4 is replaced with the right character, and ''black lozenge'' 8 on a screen 6 of the display/input means 5 is replaced with the right character.
