The invention relates to an output stage having a balanced voltage supply for driving a load connected to earth at one end. The output stage exhibits an input terminal for applying an input voltage and it outputs an output voltage to an output terminal. A first circuit branch of the output stage contains a first switching element which conducts the output current flowing through the load when an input voltage of one polarity is present. A second circuit branch contains a second circuit element which conducts the output current flowing through the load when an input voltage of the other polarity is present. A coupling circuit derives a control signal for the second circuit branch from the input voltage. The output stage is distinguished by a high output voltage swing and a low quiescent current. <IMAGE>
