Vehicle gearbox in which an auxiliary transmission with high and low speed is connected in series by a manual multigear transmission and a clutch to an engine, the auxiliary transmission (12) normally being controlled as a function of the throttle opening (19) of the engine and the vehicle speed (20). In order to improve operation of the vehicle, a control device (25) senses the actuation of the clutch in order to keep the auxiliary transmission at the low speed for a predetermined length of time following actuation of the clutch.
