In a charging apparatus for the automatic feeding of solid fuels to a heat exchanger heating boiler or heating furnace with a filling opening, a rotary drum or conveyor belt device, loaded at least on a part of the circumference with solid fuel, is provided over the filling opening of the boiler or furnace, and has its comparatively large drive roller driven by a comparatively small roller, or by a pinion, connected to a coaxial roller of large diameter, the rough envelope surface of which can be brought by its own weight into a frictional-clamping engagement with a pivotable oscillatory latch continuously driven by a lifting motor, on an upward motion of the latch, while on a downward motion of the latch the frictional-clamping engagement between the latch and the envelope surface is released and a relative motion between the latch and the envelope surface is possible. A minimum thrust of a charging apparatus is given in this manner with simple means. The thrust can be continuously adjusted, or can be controlled in dependence on the temperature of the boiler or furnace.
