PURPOSE:To obtain a high density recording medium undergoing very little wear or damage by contact with a magnetic head by forming a thin film of magnetic (Fe3O4) having superiod wear resistance and superior magnetic recording characteristics on a vertically magnetized thin film of a Co alloy. CONSTITUTION:A vertically magnetized thin film of a Co alloy such as a Co-Cr alloy is formed on the surface of a substrate such as a polyester film or a metallic sheet. A thin film of an Fe-Ni alloy or the like having high magnetic permeability may be formed before forming the Co alloy film. A thin Fe3O4 film is then formed on the Co alloy film by sputtering. The Fe3O4 film has high hardness, superior wear resistance and magnetic recording characteristics, so unlike a wear resistant nonmagnetic thin film formed as a top layer the Fe3O4 film causes no spacing loss, and reduction in output and wear of damage by contact with a magnetic head are almost prevented even after long-term repeated use.
