PURPOSE:To make a device thin, lightweight, and to reduce power consumption by providing an optical information generating part, which generates matrix display patterns, and a color selecting part and switching these matrix display patterns and the color selecting part, which selects the light transmitted through these patterns, in time division. CONSTITUTION:The rotation angle of the plane of polarization of a polarization plane control plate 5 is set to zero to select green as the light which can be transmitted through a color selecting part 20. A matrix panel 2 is driven in time division to control the transmittance of electrooptic materials, and the light is transmitted through only picture elements corresponding to a green pattern part and a yellow pattern part of display information, and an optical information generating part 22 emits light only in the green pattern part and the yellow pattern part. The first scanning is performed, and after a certain time (t), the second scanning terminating the pattern display is performed. The rotation angle of the polarization plane control plate 5 is set to about 90 deg. to select red as the light which can be transmitted through the color selecting part 20. Synchronously with this setting, scanning of the matrix panel 2 is started, and the matrix panel is driven and controlled so that only picture elements of the optical information generating part corresponding to a red pattern part and the yellow pattern part of display information emit light. |
