PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having superior corrosion resistance and high chemical stability by incorporating Co3O4 into the surface part of a magnetic thin film of Co or a Co alloy. CONSTITUTION:Co or a Co-Ni alloy is vapor-deposited on a substrate at 40- 90 deg.C incident angle in vacuum while feeding gaseous O2 to form a magnetic layer contg. Co3O4 in at least the surface part. Since this Co3O4 acts as a passive film, the corrosion resistance of the magnetic layer is improved, and a chemically stable magnetic tape having a long life is obtd.
