A reciprocating rod 14 is sealed where it extends through an opening 12 in a casing 10 by packing means 32, 34 cooled by fluid circulating through circular ducts 60 in packing-holding rings 22a, 22b, 22c and 22d, each having a side face in contact with one of the packing means. The ducts 60 are interconnected by U-shaped ducts 72, 74 and 76 in rings 22a, 22b, 22c and 22d and cooling fluid, supplied to the duct 60 in ring 22a through a duct 64, Fig. 4, formed by axially aligned passages in the portions 62 of the rings and a port (not shown) in the end plate 20 is circulated serially through the rings, via ducts 72, 74 and 76 and returned via duct 77 in ring 22a and port 70 in plate 20. Each packing 32 comprises a pair of segmental packing rings, preferably of polytetra fluoroethylene each urged into contact with the rod by a garter spring 42 and an anti-extrusion ring 46 of metal, e.g. bronze, split diametrally at 48 and surrounded by a garter spring 50. The packing 34 comprises a single polytetrafluoroethylene packing ring 54 and an antiextrusion ring 46. The rings 22a, 22b, 22c and 22d are held in alignment by two screws 78 and gaskets 80 prevent leakage between adjacent rings. A drain port 82 is provided in the plate 20.</p> |
