PURPOSE:To provise a separating agent exhibiting excellent separating capability especially to optical isomers difficult to be separated by conventional means, by using a low crystalline cellulose acetate having a crystallinity of lower than a specific level wherein the principal crystalline fraction of the acetate has the crystal form of cellulose triacetate II. CONSTITUTION:The objective separating agent contains, as an active component, a low crystalline cellulose acetate having a crystallinity of <25% and containing the crystal having the form of cellulose triacetate II crystal as the principal crystal fraction. The II-type cellulose triacetate having low crystallinity can be prepared either by acetylating a II-type cellulose by homogeneous process or heterogeneous process, or by acetylating I -type cellulose by homogeneous process, or by acetylating I -type cellulose by homogeneous process, or by acetylating I -type cellulose by heterogeneous process and then dissolving the product in a solvent. The product can be used as the separating agent by using the low crystalline cellulose triacetate II in the form of powder having a particle diameter of 0.1-100mum, or coating a porous carrier with said cellulose triacetate. The optical isomer which can be separated by the separation agent is e.g. 2-phenylcyclohexanone, etc.
