PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic recording medium suitable for high density recording and having a low coefft. of kinematic friction and superior traveling performance by using a magnetic coating material contg. magnetic powder treated with fatty acid represented by a specified formula. CONSTITUTION:Magnetic powder having 30-50m<2>/g specific surface area is treated with fatty acid represented by a formula RCOOH (where R is a hydrocarbon group) so that the fatty acid is reacted with the powder or adsorbed on it by about 1-20wt%, preferably about 2-10wt% of the amount of the powder. To the treated magnetic powder are added an abrasive material such as almina, a thermoplastic resin, a thermosetting resin, a reactive resin or a mixture thereof as a binder, and a lubricant such as high fatty acid or silicone oil which are generally used in the manufacture of a magnetic coating material, and they are well kneaded by means of a dispersing machine such as a ball mill, vibration mill, a sand mill or a kneader. The resulting coating material is coated on a nonmagnetic support such as a polyester film by a proper coating system to obtain a magnetic tape.
