<p>Resin compsns. comprise an flammable resin and at least one 3,3',5,5'-tetrabromo-x,x'- dihydroxydiphenylmethane cpd. (I), where the x,x' locants are (A) 2,2'; (B) 2,4'; or (C) 4,4'. Esp. amts. (I) are 5-40 (pref. 8-30) wt.% and cpds. (A), (B), (C) are all present, pref. in molar ratio 4-24 (A):35-55(B):22-42(C), and partic. 10-20:40-50:25-35. Cpds. (I) are prepd. by condensing phenol with HCHO and brominating the prod. Small amts. trimer and tetramer (ca. 5-15 mol.%) may be present. Resins are e.g. polystyrene, AS resin, ABS resin, nylons 11 and 12, polyethylene, polypropylene, polymethyl methacrylate, PVC, polyurethane, phenolics, epoxies and unsatd. polyester. Other flame retardants, such as Sb2O3, may be included. Cpds. (I) are solids with high dispersibility in the resins, thus conveying maximum flame retardant effect.</p> |
