摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To make bistability and monodomain property compatible with each other by sealing a liquid crystal, whose phase is switched from the cholesteric phase to the smectic phase in the course of temperature fall, between substrates one of which an orientation control film is formed at least. CONSTITUTION:A cell structure body 100 consists of substrates 101 and 101', electrodes 102 and 102', a liquid crystal layer 103, a spacer 104, an adhesive 106, an insulating orientation control film 105, polarizers 107 and 108, and a heating body 109. The liquid crystal layer 103 is first heated up to such temperature (about 180 deg.C) that it has the isotropic phase, and next, the phase transition is made to the cholestric phase of Grandjean structure (about 174 deg.C) in the course of temperature fall without cooling, and the helical structure of Grandjean structure is loosened when the phase is switched to the smectic A phase (SmA) (about 170 deg.C) and liquid crystal molecular axes of SmA are arranged by the film 105 to form uniform monodomains. Further, the phase is switched to the chiral smectic C phase.</p>
