PURPOSE:To obtain a carbonyl compound useful as industrial chemicals, solvents, medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc. industrially and advantageously in high yield, by decomposing a methylthiomethyl aryl sulfone derivative with ultraviolet light. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I (A is expressed by formula II; R is H, lower alkyl, alkoxyl or halogen; R<1> and R<2> are alkyl or R<1> and R<2> together form a group expressed by formula III; R<1> is further H; X is O, S or CH2; m and n are integers) is decomposed with ultraviolet light having generally 300-200nm, preferably 290-220nm wavelength usually in a solvent, preferably in the presence of water or/and a base to give advantageously the aimed compound expressed by the formula R<1>COR<2>. The addition of the water increases the yield of the aimed compound, and the addition of the base prevents the acidification of the reaction system and provides the aimed compound in high yield even when R<1> and R<2> are unstable under acidic conditions. The resultant compound expressed by formula ASO2H is captured in the form of a salt, and the isolation of the aimed compound is remarkably facilitated.
