An implantable programmable cardiac stimulator controlled with the aid of a microprocessor 1 and comprising a telemetry circuit 14 with a view to communication with an external programming apparatus, at least one auxiliary circuit 15, 16, consisting for example of a circuit for monitoring the proper operation of the stimulator. Besides the electrode 7 for stimulation and normal detection, there is also provided an additional electrode 9 which is independent of the circuit 4 for stimulation and detection of the stimulator. This independent electrode 9 is connected to switching means 12 controlled by the microprocessor 1 in order to connect selectively the said independent electrode 9 to one of the said telemetry or auxiliary circuits 14, 15, 16. <IMAGE>
