PURPOSE:To prevent cores, etc., from damage against abnormal external forces and bending forces by forming the plastic coat of tension member made of a buffer material substantially softer than the plastic coat of optical fiber cores. CONSTITUTION:The plastic coat 1b of the tension member 1 of an optical fiber cable is made of a buffer material substantially softer than a material for forming the outermost coat of optical fiber cores or optical fiber units 2. As the buffer material, a soft material easy in elastic deformation, such as foam PE, foam polystyrene, or soft polyurethane foam, is used, and such foam plastics are preferable from the view points of small weight, easy deformability, and impact absorption. Even when the cores or the units 2 are pressed inward by external forces, these forces are absorbed with the soft and easily deformable coats 1b of the tension member 1, and abnormal forces are not applied, and they do not damage the cores or units 2. |
