PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensive hydrogen occluding alloy having superior hydrogen occluding characteristics by adding a specified amount of at least one among B, Al and Si to an alloy consisting of Fe and a rare earth element. CONSTITUTION:Starting materials such as electrolytic iron, a rare earth element including Y, ferroboron, Al and ferrosilicon are mixed so as to provide a composition consisting of, by atom, 60-82% Fe, 10-30% rare earth element and 4-28% at least one among B, Al and Si. The mixture is melted with a high frequency melting apparatus, and the melt is cast and solidified by cooling. The resulting casting is crushed to small lumps or powder to manufacture a hydrogen occluding alloy. Unlike a conventional hydrogen occluding alloy this hydrogen occluding alloy contains inexpensive Fe as the principal component and does not contain expensive Ni, so this hydrogen occluding alloy is manufactured at a low cost.
|
