PURPOSE:To obtain the titled carbon fibers having improved wettability by an applied metal with suppressed formation of CaC2 in the boundary part between the fibers and the metal, by spinning carbonaceous pitch, oxidizing the resultant fibers to introduce COOH group into the surface thereof, substituting H atoms in the above-mentioned COOH groups with a metal, and carbonizing the fibers, etc. CONSTITUTION:Carbonaceous pitch is melt spun into fibers, which are then infusibilized under heating at 200-500 deg.C preferably in the presence of oxygen and/ or steam to introduce COOH groups into the surface thereof. The resultant fibers are then dipped or passed through an aqueous solution of an alkali, etc. to substitute H atoms in the COOH groups with the alkali metal. The resultant fibers are then washed with water, and treated with an aqueous solution of a given metal salt to substitute the alkali metal with another metal, e.g. Ni, Cu, Mg or Ca. The treated fibers are carbonized or graphitized by the conventional method to afford the aimed fibers.
