PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fibers having a high strength with high productivity in a short time, by starting the infusibilization treatment of pitch fibers at a temperature below the melting point in an oxidizing atmosphere, heating the pitch fibers at a specific heating rate to form infusible fibers, and firing the infusible fibers under heating at a high temperature in an inert atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:Pitch fibers are infusibilized and fired to produce carbon fibers. In the process, the infusibilization treatment of the pitch fibers is started at a temperature 25-100 deg.C lower than the melting point of the pitch fibers in an oxidizing atmosphere, and the fibers are heated at 5-50 deg.C/min heating rate from the start of the infusibilization up to 300 deg.C and then at a higher heating rate than that adopted before and 10-100 deg.C/min heating rate above 300 deg.C to 450- 500 deg.C to give infusible fibers having 3-7wt% oxygen content and >=10kg/mm.<2> fiber strength, which are then fired at >=1,000 deg.C in an inert atmosphere, carbonized or graphitized to afford the aimed fibers.
