PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fibers, e.g. alumina fibers, having high uniformity without melting a metal oxide, by adsorbing metal ions from a metal salt solution on ion exchange fibers, decomposing the resultant fibers under heating at a high temperature, and firing the decomposed fibers in an inert gas in the presence of oxygen, hydrogen, etc. at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:A solution or mixed solution of a metal salt, e.g. magnesium chloride, is treated with ion exchange fibers, e.g., polyacrylic acid type ion exchange fibers, to adsorb metal ions on the ion exchange fibers. The resultant fibers are then decomposed at 150-700 deg.C in air or in the presence of oxygen under normal or reduced pressure and then fired at 700-1,600 deg.C in the air or vacuum or in hydrogen or an inert gas in the presence of hydrogen under normal or reduced pressure to afford the aimed fibers.
