PURPOSE:An expandable refractory composition which can form an expanded carbonized layer when exposed to high temperature, prepared by adding a nitroso compound and a bicarbonate to a mixture of a carbonized layer forming agent in which a solventless plasticized resin is used as a binder and an expanded layer forming agent. CONSTITUTION:An expandable refractory composition prepared by adding both of a nitroso compound (e.g., dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine) and a bicarbonate (e.g., sodium bicarbonate) to a mixture of a carbonized layer forming agent (e.g., saccharose or pentaerythritol) in which a solventless plasticized resin (e.g., chlorinated PE) is used as a binder and an expanding layer forming agent (e.g., ammonium phosphate). By adding a combination of a nitroso compound and a bicarbonate, an expanded carbonized layer formed upon heating becomes dense and strong and can withstand disintegration for a long time and exhibit excellent refractoriness.
