PURPOSE:To manufacture a piston ring having superior wear resistance, workability, heat resistance and toughness by nitriding the sliding surface of a piston ring made of a high-carbon Cr-Mo-V steel to form a hard layer. CONSTITUTION:A piston ring is made of an alloy steel contg. 0.8-1.1% C, 9- 11% Cr, 0.6-1.5% Mo and 0.1-0.5% V, and the surface of the piston ring sliding along a cylinder is nitrided by gas nitriding, gas soft-nitriding, salt bath nitriding, ion nitriding or other method to form a hard nitride layer. A piston ring showing high wear resistance owing to the hard nitride layer and having superior workability, heat resistance and toughness is obtd.
