PURPOSE:To generate an image signal of a high resolution reproduced picture by horizontally scanning plural pieces of horizontal picture element strings simultaneously and by obtaining an image signal. CONSTITUTION:A horizontal picture element string of an odd number order is connected to a vertical signal line 41 in a solid image pickup element 7 and that of an even number order is connected to a vertical signal line 41'. Horizontal switches 51 and 51' connect the respective signal lines to output terminals 6 and 6' by the same horizontal scan pulse from a horizontal scan circuit 2. The image signal is written in storages 8 and 8' and at the same time, reading out is started at a reading speed twice as fast as a writing speed. The image signal is compressed into 1/2 and read out alternately from the strorages 8 and 8' and taken out as a continuous image signal through an adder 9.
