Feed and clamping apparatus for a hoop to be tensioned about a packing unit, which hoop can be initially advanced by means of a pair of wheels receiving the hoop non-positively between them in a tape guide enclosing the packing unit to be hooped at a distance and subsequently, when the front tape end is firmly secured, can be brought to rest against the packing unit by changing the direction of rotation of the pair of wheels by pulling back and then can be clamped by means of a special clamping wheel with a lower feed speed and greater force, the pair of wheels receiving the hoop non-positively between them for advancing and pulling back the hoop being formed by a feed wheel and pulling-back wheel driveable in both directions of rotation by its own motor and having a polished metallic circumferential surface and an idling wheel with an abrasion-resistant, flexible support and the idling wheel being mounted on a swivel arm and being loaded by means of a spring in the direction of the feed wheel and pulling-back wheel and simultaneously forming the idling wheel for the tensioning wheel mounted on an additional swivel arm and, when the hoop is tensioned, being separated to a limited extent by a tension-dependent swivelling of the tensioning wheel from the feed wheel and pulling-back wheel.
