Hydroformylation of allyl alcohol.

The hydroformylation of allyl alcohol by reaction thereof with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium carbonyl or rhodium carbonyl-forming catalyst exhibits high selectivity towards 2-hydroxytetrahydrofuran, and good catalyst stability, with easy separation of product from catalyst when a bi-solvent system is used. This solvent system comprises two mutually-immiscible solvents, a non-polar solvent (e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon) in which the catalyst is soluble, and a polar solvent (e.g. an amide) to dissolve the 2-hydroxytetrahydrofuran.
