The invention relates to a process and apparatus for the processing of bulk material of different particle sizes especially for the fractionation of bulk material according to its particle size, especially for the separation, and if necessary simultaneous cooling, of castings and moulding sand emptied out of casting moulds, with the simultaneous cleaning of moulding sand from the castings to which moulding sand is adherent, and also, for the (pre-)conditioning of the moulding sand, especially by the comminution of moulding sand lumps, in which the bulk material being processed is subjected to a virtually helical circulating motion, a predetermined first fraction of given particle size characteristics being first withdrawn from the bulk material being processed, before the remaining bulk material is subjected to the processing operation proper (Fig. 3). <IMAGE>
