A printing apparatus is disclosed which carries out a printing operation in a "character-by-character" operating mode or a functional processing depending on whether a depressed key is a character key or not. In contrast, in a "line-by-line" operating mode and if the depressed key is not a carriage displacement key, either a character memory operation or a functional processing including a printing operation is carried out depending on whether a character key was depressed or not. If no character is entered in the "line-by-line" operating mode, a carriage displacement operation is carried out, as a result of which it is possible to change the positions of tabulators and margins and the position at which printing begins.
